Supermassive Games are looking for a talented and experienced Animation Director to play a key role in the development of a new title. We need a proactive person to join our team, someone who is looking to help us achieve visual excellence, collaborate to define, and craft the vision for this title and take on responsibilities across the animation spectrum from formulating concepts and defining the quality bar to supervising production.

The primary responsibility of this role is to collaborate with the Creative Director and senior project team and direct and help the game team achieve the animation quality and vision for the game.

Experience:

  • Significant experience as an animator in a director or lead role in Film, Television or Games with several published titles
  • Previous experience of directing teams to a proven high level of quality
  • In-depth understanding and practical experience of human and non-human animation from the practical skills of hands-on creation to supporting and shaping the delivery of complex scenes and characters to AAA quality and an understanding of other key areas of the animation pipeline including:
    • Mocap techniques and associated tool chains
    • Keyframe techniques
    • Technical animation skills (rigging, skinning, facial rigs, IK, cloth simulations etc)
    • Managing teams of animators onsite and remotely
  • Experience using Unreal Engine would be an advantage, but not a necessity

The role:

Reporting to the Executive Producer you will be part of the leadership team.

Key Skills and Responsibilities:

During Design & Pre-production Phase demonstrate:

  • Collaboration with the Creative Director and senior team to devise the aims for animation and character performance quality and style of the game
  • The ability to create, and/or direct the creation of, materials that clearly convey that style and quality as targets for internal and external stakeholders.
  • The skill to consider and propose, where appropriate, new methods, techniques, and technologies to improve quality or efficiency in the production phase

During the Production Phase you will:

  • Support the development effort in its creative aims without compromising its design, commercial and technical requirements
  • Brief individuals on the team, with the assistance of other experts as required, on the aims for the materials that they and their teams will create, and how these will work visually and technically and mesh with other game components
  • Collaborate with senior team members in the review of the game to determine the nature of any work or rework required to meet its quality goals
  • Participate in continuous review and feedback of the title under development with the team.
  • Create, and/or direct the creation of, materials that are consistent with direction and artistic aims of the game, these materials could include:
    • Define and demonstrate the animation quality and content and clearly communicate this to the animation team
    •  To direct, coordinate and review the work of the animation team to ensure the highest quality results
    • Actively participate in animation system design and issue resolution
    • Demonstrate knowledge and application of industry leading animation processes and techniques
    • Ensure the quality of the integration of the animations
  • Support, direct and contribute to the generation of marketing and PR materials

Technical Skills/Knowledge

In-depth knowledge of the latest animation pipelines, techniques and tools including:

  • In-depth knowledge of the latest animation pipelines, techniques and tools including:
  • Industry standard tools such as Maya and Motion Builder
  • Extensive knowledge of principals of key-frame and motion capture production methods
  • Experience of Character creation pipelines, character rigs and facial animation solutions
  • Post production animation tools (Premier)
